Our Background

The idea for Feed the Birds originally came from the mother of one of our trustees. She noticed that her elderly neighbours were increasingly unable to maintain their bird feeders. She wondered if volunteers could visit to look after the bird feeders whilst providing some company. Feed the Birds was subsequently founded by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust in 2016. To expand the scheme further we decided to set Feed the Birds up as a separate charity in 2024

How it works

Feed the Birds is a unique befriending scheme based in Shropshire. We provide one to one visits by a trained volunteer who sets up a bird feeder station – provided by the scheme – and then visits once a week for up to an hour, chatting with the client and listening to their stories. The volunteer provides unconditional companionship based around a shared love of nature and garden birds. Our clients are often house bound and living with age-related conditions and illnesses such as Parkinson’s, Dementia, COPD, sight-loss, mobility issues and bereavement resulting in loneliness and social isolation.

We have 7 years’ experience of delivery, supporting over 100 clients in Shropshire and have trained over 100 volunteers.

Feed the Birds is a unique befriending service. There is no other befriending service that uses nature and the simple act of bird feeding, to connect with people who self-isolate or who are socially isolated and lonely. Our clients are often those people who reject other befriending or support services. We ask them to help us take care of nature and the birds in their garden and this acts as a hook to get them and their families on board.
